My Cooking Journey
I started cooking when I was very young, by helping my mom in the kitchen. My mom was known in our household, to be an amazing cook. She could have gone professional if she wanted to, but instead she decided to cook for my two brothers and I growing up.
Because my mom was Korean American, she cooked a lot of Korean dishes, like Kimchi, chapchae, and bulgolgi. But she also cooked almost everything else. She cooked Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai, American (she made the best apple pie), among many others.
Growing up, I got good exposure to a variety of flavors and cuisines and worked alongside my mom to learn her secrets to amazing and healthy food.
It wasn’t until I was in college and on my own, did I start to develop my own independence with food and cooking. I started applying more often my mom’s kitchen wisdom and trying out new dishes myself.
In those first few years, I discovered my passion for creating big flavors in a healthy way. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with candy and all of its colors. When I grew up, I became obsessed with fruits and vegetables, and all of their colors. I became passionate about how healthy eating could become just as much fun and rewarding when done creatively.
My cooking style developed into one where I loved creating recipes that were vegetable or fruit heavy, and Asian-inspired. Some of my favorite meals are str fries, tofu kimchi stew, and hot and sour soup.
However, that doesn’t mean I don’t love making salads, smoothies, or meat-heavy dishes. You’ll see a variety on Audreythena Food Goddess. I hope this variety will serve you in the different times of your life when you are exploring different foods and ways of cooking.
As I continue to learn and grow in my food and cooking journey, I want to share it with you!
How I Got Started with Audreythena
I started Audreythena Food Goddess in 2020, while I was still in college. I’d had learned how much I enjoy cooking and sharing food with others, so I wanted to continue doing so but in a slightly different way through the Internet.
I decided on my name, because I wanted to show people that Audreythena Food Goddess could be a trusted resource online for learning how to cook and getting recipe inspiration.
I wanted to connect my love of food to serving others. But that wasn’t all. I hope that through Audreythena Food Goddess, you can begin the journey of becoming a food goddess or god yourself – mastering the skills of the kitchen to bring delicious and healthy food to you and your family.
Why Audreythena?
You would never guess how I came up with this name. You might think that I connected it to the Greek goddess of food. That maybe, I wanted to create some word play between athena and my name.
Well if you thought that, then you were wrong. Ironically.
When I was still in high school, I worked for my local grocery store, Haggens, in the bakery. It was the best and most fun I’d had in any job! I helped bake bread, cakes, and cookies. I helped package all the goods and put them out on the shelves. It was a creative and laid back job for me, and the people that I worked with were amazing.
Every other day or so, either at the beginning or end of my shift, I would always check in with the store manager, Barney. Coming from working in the front end by the cash registers, I had developed a good relationship with him. So, he would always say hello and check in with each other.
Whenever we would say goodbye or just pass each other in the busy moments of our jobs, he would almost whisper under his breath “hello audreythena”.
At first I didn’t know what he was saying, until one day he said it loud enough and I was like, “wait what lol”. After that, it became the joke between us, and he would always greet me this way, despite me really understanding why.
So fast forward several years when I started my food blog and had to pick a name. Of course, I wanted to pick a name that was creative, demonstrated my love of food, and showed my expertise. This was the one name I couldn’t get out of my head. So, I just decided to use it and run with it!
Living in Seattle, WA with My Husband
Right now, I’m living with my husband in the Greater Seattle Area, in a town called Lynnwood, just north of the city.
We’ve been married for the last two years, and have been loving it so far!
He is my best friend and most favorite person in the world. We love spending time together, and my favorite way to spend my free time is with him.
We love hiking together, shooting our bows together, and taking strolls. We enjoy exploring small towns in western Washington. Plus, he’s my go-to person for testing out new recipes on.
On Audreythena Food Goddess, I’ll be sharing my latest creations for busy people wanting to be healthier. I encourage you to browse my most popular recipes below and subscribe to my newsletter!
Happy Cooking!
With love,
Audrey Sommer
